Joe Satriani Feels ‘Very Positive’ About Chickenfoot Getting Together in 2018

Joe Satriani might be prepping for the January release of his latest solo album, What Happens Next, and tour in support of it, but he’s also got Chickenfoot on his mind. Speaking to Eddie Trunk recently, the guitarist revealed that it was frontman Sammy Hagar who brought up the supergroup and his plans for it in 2018.
“A couple of weeks ago, when [Satriani’s band] were heading down to South America for a one-off, I got a call just as I was getting in the car to go to the airport and it’s Sam saying, ‘I just wanna let you know, 2018, I’m dedicating it all to Chickenfoot,’” Satriani says. “It totally blew my mind, and I had no idea what to do with that piece of information. Because I said, ‘You know, Sam, I’m doing a [solo] record and a tour, and a G3 tour.’”
Chickenfoot, of course, is rounded out by bassist — and Hagar’s fellow ex-Van Halen bandmate — Michael Anthony and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith. Satriani brought up the latter as one more question mark for the near future, because he’s just wrapping up a tour with his main band. Still, Satch is feeling confident something could happen.
“I was thinking, ‘I have a feeling Chad’s gonna go on a long vacation, ’cause he’s just getting off a two-and-half-year tour or something,’” he says. “So I don’t know what’s going to happen. But I’m sure we’ll be getting together at some point next year. I told him, ‘Look, you know I’m working,’ because we rehearsed for the tour at his studio, so he knows all about my schedule. But I said, ‘You know, if I have a day off, I’m there working in the studio with you.’ So I’m feeling very positive about that.”
Earlier this year, Chickenfoot released Best + Live, which included a new track called “Divine Termination,” which was the band’s first new tune in five years. Back in May of 2016, they reunited for two shows at Harrah’s in Lake Tahoe, Nev., and played their first set together in more than six years.
